Cephalic and pectoral girdle muscles of the clupeiform Denticeps clupeoides , with comments on the homologies and plesiomorphic states of these muscles within the Otocephala (Teleostei)

چکیده
Th e muscles of the cephalic region and pectoral girdle of Denticeps clupeoides are described and compared with those of other otocephalans (= clupeomorphs + ostariophysans). In general, the confi guration of the cephalic and pectoral girdle muscles of Denticeps seems to correspond to the plesiomorphic condition for extant otocephalans, the main exceptions being: the dilatator operculi, which is rather small and is to a great extent covered in lateral view by the preopercle; the arrector dorsalis, which is not divided into two well-diff erentiated, separate sections; the protractor pectoralis, which is missing. Comments on the homologies, plesiomorphic states and evolution of the cephalic and pectoral muscles within the Otocephala are given.

A Review of the Cranial and Pectoral Musculature of Gonorynchiform Fishes, with Comments on Their Functional Morphology and a Comparison with Other Otocephalans
Very few studies focused on the anatomy of gonorynchiforms deal in detail with their musculature. In this paper I provide an overview of the cranial musculature (excluding branchial and extrinsic eye musculature) and pectoral girdle musculature of extant gonorynchiforms. Some comments on the functional morphology of these fishes, as well as a comparison with other otocephalans, are also given. ...

The cephalic portions of the latero-sensory canal system in Denticeps clupeoides are described and analyzed. The species, a small herring-like fish from relictual West African streams, is the most primitive living clupeomorph and sole Recent representative of suborder Denticipitoidei. As sister group to over 360 species in Clupeoidei, Denticeps is a key taxon in understanding clupeomorph and lo...
متن کاملOn the osteology and myology of catfish pectoral girdle, with a reflection on catfish (Teleostei: Siluriformes) plesiomorphies.
The configuration of the pectoral girdle bones and muscles of numerous catfishes was studied in detail and compared with that of other siluriforms, as well as of other teleosts, described in the literature. The pectoral girdle of catfishes is composed of only three bones, which probably correspond to the posttemporo-supracleithrum (posttemporal + supracleithrum), scapulo-coracoid (scapula + cor...

The muscles of the cephalic region and pectoral girdle of Arius heudeloti, Genidens genidens andBagre marinus are described and compared with those of non-ariid siluriforms. Our observations and compar-isons revealed that, although the configuration of the cephalic and pectoral girdle musculature of these ariidspecies is basically similar to that of other catfishes, these species pr...
متن کاملCephalic muscles of Cyclostomes (hagfishes and lampreys) and Chondrichthyes (sharks, rays and holocephalans): comparative anatomy and early evolution of the vertebrate head muscles
Living vertebrate diversity comprises hagfishes and lampreys (Cyclostomata), elasmobranchs and holocephalans (Chondrichthyes), and bony fish which include tetrapods (Osteichthyes). Based on dissections and an extensive comparative analysis, we provide an updated overview of the anatomy, homologies and evolution of cyclostome and chondrichthyan cephalic muscles, with osteichthyans as primary com...
